About Western Softball

2011-12 Undefeated Canadian University Champions

Intercollegiate athletics is about striving for excellence both on and off the field.  As such, student-athletes must develop a host of characteristics that make them very special.  This includes formulation of a workable plan, managing time effectively, working hard, learning team strategies, becoming confident, executing complex skills under pressure, being humble, understanding one’s role on the team, learning to overcome adversity, and knowing how to contribute more than one’s share.

Along the way student-athletes develop lasting friendships, they have a great deal of fun, and they become better individuals.  Of course, these quality traits can be learned other ways but often not so systematically.  As a result, quality team sport athletes are often very successful in whatever they choose to do after graduation.  Very simply, many will be community leaders of the future.

However, as you might imagine the process has some cost such as travel, equipment, umpire fees, field maintenance, etc.  Mustang softball raises >$20,000 every year towards its own operating expenses.  This is accomplished by a number of team initiatives (community educational wellness symposium, youth ball clinics, an annual elementary school tournament, game concessions, advertising revenue, commission on sales of tickets to other Mustang sports, and our Mustang Sponsorship program) as well as the help of a large number of friends of Mustang softball.  Our plan is to increase these dollars further so we can continue to develop our program. Current priorities include upgrading our practice field so we can play games on campus and building a batting cage for hitting practice.
